Hip Replacement in your Seventies

Author: Webmaster     Date: 3/21/2005

"Although surgery can be daunting, hip replacement enjoys a very high success rate."

As we get older, the cartilage in our joints degenerates and the possibility of needing hip surgery greatly increases.

The process begins with a visit to your local GP who will refer you for an X-ray at your local hospital. The source of any discomfort can then be determined and a consultant will advise you on the next step. If a Total Hip Replacement is required, waiting for NHS treatment or privately funding your operation is the next decision.

Prior to the operation, the cosultant will talk you through the operation and answer any questions you may have. Operations of this type have a success rate of 80%.

After the operation, the patient will need time to recuperate and a stay of 5 or 7 days is not uncommon. The surgeon who performed the operation will check on your progress and a course of physiotherapy will begin.

Although an operation of this type can be daunting, most patients find they can once again enjoy an active and pain free life.

Mr Johnson comments....

Total hip replacement is a very reliable operation with many tens of thousands of these procedures being undertaken each year. Even elderly patients should be expected to recover well and notice an improvement in their quality of life. The risks of complications are minimised by various measures taken during the procedure. New implant developments and surgical techniques continue to improve the success of the procedure and shorten the time taken to fully recover from the procedure.
